greeneyes chapter 1: "hydrogen": summary and explanation

It's become pretty obvious that casually reading through all of the pages, especially if you read them one at a time as they were posted each week, leaves one with a sense of not really having any idea what the heck is going on. Taking a cue from Seasons of Constancy, one of my favorite comics of late, I'm putting together this little primer for people who feel a little lost. Anything that's still unclear after having read both the greeneyes Premise and this summary, is probably meant to be a mystery for now.

We find a girl in bed, who seems not to be feeling well. She sits up, and then falls to the floor, coughing. She finally coughs up some sort of tiny little stones.

The next day, we see the same girl sitting against a wall at her school before classes have begun. The school, Wilkinson High(Lerxstwood) is in the Colony of Urbanite, on Mars, and the year is 2285. It's the first day of school. Wilkinson is an education corporation that has established numerous schools of varying levels. This particular one is a high school, located in Lerxstwood, Urbanite, thus the name.

In walks another student, who we learn is Molly "Kirara" Sureza. She has something of a striking appearance with her dynamic dress (that is, the pattern on the dress moves) and neon tiara. She notices that the girl sitting near the entrance has the same bag as herself, and strikes up a conversation. Kirara, the outgoing girl, and μ, the shy girl, then talk a bit. We learn that Kirara is an ∫, or "Integral". This is a subculture of hip, navi-savvy folks with distinctive dress and mannerisms. Navis are basically very powerful hand-held computers that are always wirelessly connected to a network. Kirara's nickname and her dynamic tattoo, which reads "Lemon Girl", come from her association with ∫ culture. You with me so far?

We also learn that μ (pronounced "myuu") comes from the suburb Seventeen Corners, which leads Kirara to believe μ comes from a rich family. Kirara then notices that μ has a particularly rare type of navi, the Rickentosh 4003. μ admits that she, too, is quite interested in navis. Kirara reveals that she has the same model.

μ, in class, muses about the significance of having met an actual ∫. She then needs to explain her unusual name to the vitalogy professor, who finds it charming.

Kirara meets μ after classes and invites her to come to the Navi room with some friends. In the Navi room we meet Nenée, who is talking to Mr. Grimes, the head of the school's navi department. He compliments Nenée on her impressive record in navi manipulation at her previous school. She graduated as navivaledictorian, an honor granted to the student showing most promise in navi-related fields, from Wilkinson School(Redwood), the same school as Kirara. The two of them have been friends for years.

Kirara then suggests that everyone go to Winker's, a nearby gaming cafe. She and μ go on ahead of the others. While waiting for the elevator, Kirara asks μ if she has been too outgoing, or if her being an ∫ makes μ uncomfortable. μ is startled and tries to explain that she has always been ridiculed for her unique appearance, and is grateful for having made a new friend so quickly. Kirara is relieved and tells μ that she is welcome to hang out with their group of friends.

When the elevator doesn't come for a while, Kirara suggests taking the stairs. The school is rather vertically oriented, and the navi room is at the top, on the 18th floor. So it's going to be a walk. The stairs are rather disused, as they only exist for emergency situations.

We have a brief interlude that explains μ's physical situation. By now we have noticed that she has bright green eyes and rows of circular studs in place of eyebrows. These characteristics are due to custom genes assigned by her parents before her birth. Nearly all children in this time are genetically modified before birth to be resistant to disease, physically stable, and apt to learn, but her cosmetic modifications are quite strange. Her hair is a pale purple, and we find out that she has a total of thirty titanium studs on her body, and that her eyes actually radiate light. It is also possible that she has other, yet unidentified genetic modifications, or some kind of symbiotic nanomachines in her body.

μ seems to go into some kind of trance while staring down the center of the stairwell. She looks down for a while, then pushes herself over the edge. Kirara catches her by the ankle just as she is about to fall straight down. Afterwards, μ seems unaware of what has just happened.

Later, at Winker's, the cafe, we meet the rest of Kirara's friends. Hifumi, who has graduated from Third Navi Academy, wonders if μ's eyes' glowing is normal. It is; they've always glowed. Torn, also from Third Navi Academy, suggests that μ see the school nurse about her incident at the stairs, but μ refuses. Kirara suggests that they play a navi game to keep μ's mind off of things. The game is Counter-Clockwise, a popular game among ∫. The idea of the game is that each player chooses a word from a short, randomly-generated list. Each word represents a module that has been written by the game's creators or by another player. Once all of the words have been chosen, a game with its own rules, systems, and setting are created out of the modules that have been selected. The game that ends up being created this time around is "Inverted Burger Boat Gangsters".

μ's newly started high school life continues like this for a couple of weeks. Going to classes, meeting at the navi room, then playing Counter-Clockwise at Winker's becomes her routine. She becomes closer to Kirara, Nenée, Torn, and Hifumi. She even writes her own Counter-Clockwise module. However, as she is not the expert navi-handler that they, as ∫, all are, she sometimes feels left out. There are also students who openly mock her, like at her previous school. Also, her physical condition seems to be worsening.

This is basically what's happened so far. Not a lot, really, considering how long it took us to make. I just hope this will help some folks know what's going on. It's easy for us to assume that everything's crystal clear, just because we've got the scripts sitting right here in front of us. If there's anything else that doesn't seem to make sense, feel free to write in. *^_^*
